Book Club Meet Ups

Our September Chapter took us deep into Turan with Shield of Sparrows, and our Lanterns had plenty to say.
Ratings ranged anywhere from 3 stars to infinite, landing on an overall average of ★4.2/5.
Some Lanterns were completely swept away by the story. The monsters, the world building, the plot, and that deliciously tense love interest.
Others felt the ending tried to pack a little too much in, with a few twists and side threads that need more space to shine.
A few of us devoured the book in two days (though reading it poolside in Greece may have helped). Others loved it at first read, then found themselves picking at details on the reread — whoops.
Favourite elements: The monsters, hands down. Terrifying, fascinating, and beautifully written.
We especially loved watching Odessa’s evolution from overlooked princess to determined warrior, finally seizing a freedom that’s hers alone. And that crux moment? Absolute chaos in the best way.
Of course, no Lanterns meeting would be complete without wild theories. Some believe Odessa’s hidden red hair has a magical purpose, while our resident redhead insists it’s just “red hair shaming” a tale as old as time.
Final Verdict:
We’re all desperate for book two. Bring on more monsters, more magic, and (please) some answers.

Our July Chapter brought the heat with Metal Slinger, and our Lanterns had a lot to say! This story sparked mixed reviews, with ratings ranging from 3 to 5 stars. Some were hooked from page one, while others took a little longer to warm up. Some of our Lanterns felt a little robbed of the pirate story they were hoping for. Expectations were high for giant squids, metal magic, sea faring adventures, and salty rebellion, but the story quickly charted a different course.
What did our Lanterns think?
That plot twist? Game changer. What started as a fairly predictable arc quickly flipped expectations, especially with that ending. Many of us went from side-eyeing the story to appreciating the bigger play behind the scenes.
But not everything hit the mark.
One common frustration? Brynn’s character shift. Introduced as a fierce, capable fighter, she seemed to fade quickly into the background. Her voice replaced by a more passive, compliant version of herself, following a prince who was a little too sure of himself. Thankfully, that final reveal changed everything and had us reassessing what we thought we knew.
What did we want more of?
World building a stronger sense of the kingdoms, politics, and history.
Magic system detail! It had potential, and we’re hoping book two delivers more depth.
Favourite Character?
Messer was an easy standout for many Lanterns. Charming, dangerous, and full of intrigue.

Are we reading book two?
Absolutely. Every single Lantern agreed, we’re in. We even shared our wildest theories and are already planning a read along bingo card for its release. Bring it on.

Our Lanterns gathered at Avocados, nestled in the Perth Hills, for a moody and atmospheric discussion of One Dark Window. Blessed with a rainy, overcast day, the setting felt like it had leapt straight from the pages. Perfect for diving into the shadowy world of Elspeth and the Nightmare.
What did our Lanterns think?
Some Lanterns couldn’t put this book down, swept away by the haunting forest, eerie tension, and dark fairy tale feel. Others felt a little let down, especially when it came to the love story. Some were all in, others didn’t quite buy the chemistry.
But one thing we all agreed on? The magic system was a standout.
The idea of magical Providence Cards captured everyone’s attention.
Favourite Character?
Overwhelmingly, our Lanterns loved the Nightmare. His presence, mystery, and dry wit made him a clear favourite.

Did everyone want to read book two?
Interestingly, most of our Lanterns had already finished Two Twisted Crowns before our meeting. Some found the first book so gripping they couldn’t stop. Others felt book one didn’t capture them enough to continue, but the divide made for a great conversation!
